SELF CONTROL

We ask questions like why can't I achieve more, why can't I break from that bad habit, why can't I get out of that debt, why can't I loose weight?, I can't do all these because I lack self control.

Your biggest problem is you.

Self control is the ability to control oneself, emotions, thought, desires, especially in difficult situation.

It is one of the fruit of the holy spirit. (Galatians 5 : 22-23)

Biblically, you can define it as discipline that God grows in us when we continually choose to die to our flesh and live in him.

The distance between your dreams and reality is self control and discipline.

If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self. ( Napoleon Hill)

Self control is strength, if you loose it every thing will fall.

Self control is a key factor in achieving success, we can't control everything in life, but we can definitely control ourselves.

Proverbs 25:28 (like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self control)

AREAS WHERE WE LOSE SELF CONTROL OR SHOW A LACK OF IT.

f. Bad habits.

1. Appetite : Proverbs 25:16 ( have you found honey? Eat only as much as you need lest you will be filled with it and vomit).

We must have control or rule our appetite instead of allowing our appetite to rule us. Genesis 25 ( Esau lacked self control when he gave up his birth right for a bowel of stew).

Health : Eating of jungs, unhealthy diet, gluttony plays a major role in obesity, and this predisposes one to alot of disease, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus.

2. Sexual desires : 1corinthians 7:9 ( If they cannot exercise self control, let them marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion).

3. Speech : The tongue is the tool that has no bones, but can break the heart. It is the only tool that gets sharper with use.

Proverbs 18:25 ( Death and life lies in the power of the tongue).

The way one talks is very revealing index of his character.

4. Emotions : Having self control over our emotions doesn't mean that we have no feelings, but is what we do with those feelings that matters.

Negative emotions like anger, envy, or bitterness should be avoided.

5. Material desires : Proverbs 21:17 ( Those who love pleasure become poor, those who love wine and luxury will never be rich.

Wasteful spenders cannot enjoy wealth in life

Avoid borrowing when you know that you can't pay.
